AreaMax LED Luminaire Wins Prestigious NGL Outdoor Lighting Award

February 28, 2014. Seattle, WA… Evluma’s 40W AreaMax™ was chosen as a Recognized Winner for Residential Roadway Lighting in the 2013 Outdoor Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) Solid-State Lighting Design Competition. Winners of the competition were announced on February 26, 2014 at the 15th Annual Strategies in Light Conference, Santa Clara, CA. John Renn, Chief Scientist at Evluma, was present to accept the award. Judges selected the winning luminaires on the basis of color quality, appropriate illuminance, light distribution, glare control, appearance, serviceability and value. The Next Generation Luminaires Lighting Design Competition is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the International Association of Lighting Designers.

The NGL Competition was launched in 2008 with the idea to make it easier for specifiers of LED lighting to find quality products. “Evluma is proud to have the AreaMax recognized by this competition. Our field tests and our customers have told us that the AreaMax is a winner. It is great to have that validated by this notable award,” said President and CEO, Keith Miller. The judges commented that they “…appreciated the excellent glare control and low brightness of the AreaMax, noting that it would be particularly well suited for residential applications.”

The judging session took place December 9-11, 2013. 68 products were approved to participate in the competition. A total of 102 products were submitted, but not all products were market ready; others lacked the required documentation, such as LM-79 test reports and LM-80 life data. Six evaluation venues were established at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI). Parking lot luminaires were mounted on a truss in a VTTI parking area, while street and roadway luminaires were installed on poles along VTTI roadways. Each submission’s supporting documentation was reviewed. ‘Tabletop’ samples were deconstructed to assess serviceability.

The 40W AreaMax was released for production in early 2013. Since then, Evluma has released a 70W model for those customers requiring additional light for their application. Lighting Facts members since 2010, Evluma announced DLC Qualification for the 40W AreaMax product family in April 2013. Known as “The Utility Standard” for area and security lighting, the AreaMax also comes with patented Photocontrol Failsafe™ built-in.
