High School Student and Future Lighting Professional visits Evluma
Ian Tumlin, a high school student reached out to Evluma with an interest in shadowing. We had the pleasure of showing Ian around our office on the 24th of October.
A post-visit interview with Ian is below.
First things first, what is your hometown, what high school do you attend, and what year are you graduating?
My hometown is Eatonville, WA. I attend Cascade Christian High School in Puyallup and am graduating in 2025
Do you have a favorite high school class? Favorite ice cream flavor?
My favorite high school class is math. My favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate peanut butter.
Yum. What made you interested in lighting and outdoor lighting specifically?
I had been interested in street lights since I was two years old. In 2020, I discovered an online lighting forum/gallery that contained a lot of photos and information about street lights; that led me to pursue them as my main interest.
We hope you found your visit to Evluma engaging! Do you want to share a specific experience from that day? Maybe a surprising fact, cool experience, strange equipment, cool employee, cooler interviewer?
I was ecstatic to be at Evluma’s headquarters! I really liked the display case in the lobby, as well as the loft in the warehouse where [historical products] are stored. I had no idea that Evluma started out as a printer manufacturer or that the Clearlight was their first LED product. I thought the optical measuring machine in the darkroom was a cool piece of equipment; I got to see [upcoming prototypes], which was also cool. Everyone at Evluma was awesome! I appreciate what you all did for my visit!
I’ll take it!
What do you plan to study in college and what area of lighting do you want to work in? What makes that part of lighting the most interesting to you?
I want to study mechanical engineering and want to go into the outdoor lighting design business.
The fixture design is so important to me because I appreciate everyone’s unique styles and exclusive features.
If you could change one thing for the future of the lighting industry, what would it be?
If I could change one thing for the future of lighting, it would be to improve LED fixture reliability and serviceability. I’ve noticed that many LED luminaires aren’t living up to their claimed lifespan; additionally, when the whole fixture dies, no utility company bothers to service it and ends up tossing the entire unit out.
And last, what is your favorite Evluma light, your favorite light you own, and what’s the best CCT?
My favorite Evluma product is the new RoadMax – particularly the RX3. My favorite light that I own is probably my vintage Holophane Lobay turned reading light hanging in my room. The best CCT is 3,000K because it’s easier on the eyes and it makes the surroundings look vibrant and alive.
Thank you and the rest of the Evluma crew so much for having me at your headquarters. It was truly an honor to be there.
If Ian is any indication of the future of the lighting industry, then we are in good hands.
Thank you, Ian!
